The economic geography of the south-east Midlands in 1801-1851

These maps have been produced by Leigh Shaw-Taylor, Max Satchell and Peter Kitson as part of the E.S.R.C. funded project, Male Occupational Change and Economic Growth in England 1750-1851 (RES 000-23-0131). They are draft maps and are not yet published. Please do not cite or reproduce them without written permission.

The maps cover the historic counties of Cambridgeshire, Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire Huntingdonshire, and Northamptonshire. They are based on four datasets: the electronic boundaries created by Kain and Oliver[1]; occupational data abstracted from c. 1050 Anglican baptism registers for the period 1813-20; occupational data published in the 1851 census; and parish and registration district population data published in the 1851 census.

The data are mapped at two spatial levels. A few of the maps use data from both 1813-20 and 1851 mapped into the 1851 registration districts (as defined by the 1851 census). Most the maps show 1813-20 data at parish level. Most of these have been selected because they exhibit geographical patterns which are obscured by mapping at more aggregate spatial units such as registration districts. We will soon be adding a parallel set of parish maps for 1881.

Note: Maps 1.2 to 2.2 have not yet been produced
