WP2 – Improved constraints on marine processes

Leader : Laboratoire des Science du Climat et de l’EnvironnmentDr Laurent Bopp

Input to Science and Environmental Policy : WP2 – Briefing Paper

Objectives

The overall objective of WP2 is improved constraints on marine biogeochemical processes through targeted model evaluation, with a major focus on the ecological aspects of marine biogeochemical cycles.

Specific tasks will focus on:

  • Representing marine phytoplankton dynamics in ocean biogeochemical models using new datasets as constraints, and the impact of climate change on the distribution of key phytoplankton functional groups.
  • Assessing the role of the microbial loop in oceanic biogeochemical cycles (in particular its contribution to climate-carbon feedbacks) using laboratory work, data synthesis, and modelling.
  • Representation of the marine N cycle through improving existing models and using new datasets, and assessing its importance in marine biogeochemistry-climate feedbacks.

Deliverables

Publications:

  • Joint work package position paper with WP2 and WP3, describing the state-of-the-art with respect to using ESM evaluations to constrain future projections – more details coming soon!
  • In addition, a WP2 position paper associated with MC2 will be published describing new methodologies and outcomes concerning impacts of climate change on marine ecosystems – more details coming soon!

Scientific products:

  • A rigorous evaluation of marine biogeochemical models and a framework for using this to constrain model projections.
  • Fully tested and documented improvements to existing models either for use offline or coupled to ESMs.
