Francisco J. B. Oliveira Filho

PhD Candidate

My research focuses on the different relationships between policies and actions that may have influenced the reversal of deforestation and land use changes in the Brazilian Amazon over the past decade.

Biography

In the last 18 years I have been involved with the Amazon region. My first achievement was academic, an MSc in Landscape Ecology, investigating different patterns of land use and their effects on biodiversity. Followed by a period as a member of the team responsible for the development of the Surveillance System for the Amazon region Project (SIVAM). Moving next to the Brazilian Government, in 2002, I held the position of Deputy Director of Environment Protection at the Brazilian Environment Agency-IBAMA for five years, taking part of the federal government´s plan against deforestation. Then I became the leader of Protected Areas Program at WWF-Brazil. In 2010-11, I was involved with the Conservation Leadership MPhil at the University of Cambridge. In 2012, I joined the Brazilian Ministry of Environment as director of policies to combat deforestation.

Research

My research interest is in tropical forests deforestation, land use change and policy implementation. This study aims to elucidate which factors: environmental, economic and/or social, alone or in combination, may have influenced the reduction of deforestation and dynamics of land use in the Brazilian Amazon. Thus, the central question of the project is to evaluate the role of environmental law enforcement in reducing deforestation in the Amazon and its consequences in the remodeling of land use.
