Celebration of the life of Graham Smith

This celebration will take place in the Hall of Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge, on Sunday 26 September 1999 (2-4 pm). Stuart, Linda and Gerry are coordinating it. Linda will be at the LSE from 1 September and Stuart will be in Miami, so, if you would like to come, contact Gerry Kearns. The precise format of the Celebration has yet to be decided. If you have an idea that you would like to discuss, contact Gerry, Linda or Stuart, as below. We intend to put together a Book Remembrances for Graham’s family, and we would welcome any photos or other tributes or reminiscences that you might have and think appropriate for such a book.

We are also planning to establish a fund in Graham’s memory. If you would like to contribute to the Graham Smith Memorial Fund, please send a cheque to the Bursar at Sidney Sussex College. The cheque should be made out in facour of Sidney Sussex College, but marked for the Graham Smith Memorial Fund. We are discussing with Graham’s wife, Marilyn, and others about how we would use the funds raised. Of course, much depends upon how much is raised. For the fund to make annual disbursements we need to raise about thirty times the amount we would like to spend in any one year. If you have any suggestions about how the fund might best be used, please let us know. So far, we have considered the following worthwhile purposes providing funds allow: a Graham Smith Memorial Lecture, perhaps every second year; travel bursaries for Cambridge students; and tuition support for students from Central or Eastern Europe.

Finally, although we are trying hard to reach a large number of Graham’s friends and ex-students, it is inevitable that we won’t reach everyone. Do please copy this letter to anyone you think should know about our plans, and who you think we might not have contacted.
