Atmospheric and climate modeller focusing on aerosols and clouds.

Biography

During my PhD at the University of Leeds, I worked as part of the CERN CLOUD project. I used the GLOMAP global aerosol model to investigate the effects of cosmic-ray-induced ionisation on the formation of secondary aerosols. Our findings on the contributions of ionisation and ammonia to global aerosol concentrations were published in Science in December of 2016.

In 2012 I moved to the Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI) in Kuopio, Finland. Initially I worked with Hannele Korhonen on her Academy of Finland Research Fellow project on Marine CCN. We studied the processes which regulate aerosol concentrations in marine regions.

In 2014, I was awarded funding as an Academy of Finland Postdoctoral Researcher. My work on Emulating CLoud-Aerosol Indirect Radiative Effects (ECLAIRE) was designed to construct a statistical emulator of a Large Eddy Simulation (LES) to implement in a global climate model. The project continues at the Climate Modelling group in FMI Helsinki.

I relocated to Cambridge in 2017 to work on the LES4CCFM portion of the ParaCon project. My work will focus on parameterisations of atmospheric convection for use in global models.

Research

Current research

As part of my work at the Department of Geography, I will participate in LES4CCFM as part of the Parameterization of Convection (ParaCon) project. My role is to improve the Convective Cloud Field Model (CCFM) entraining parcel model, by revising the representation of physical processes in its convective parameterization based on Large Eddy Simulations (LES).
