Staff levels

  • The Library has a staff of two.
  • The Library and Information Manager, Mr Liam Herbert, works full-time but splits his time between the Geography and the University Library to cover a 50% seconded role until end of March 2022.
  • The Library and Information Assistant, Mrs Jane Hampshire, works full-time during Full Term hours but only part-time during vacation hours.
  • This means that:
    • Full Term hours now operate: 10:00-16:00 on weekdays, with either a morning (10:00-12:00) or afternoon (13:00-16:00) session available.
    • the reading rooms are reopening for studying by pre-booked appointment only, and we have a reduced capacity for occupancy. Library staff are also providing zero contact services during our operating hours.
    • visitors from other faculties and departments have no access to the Geography building, and so cannot easily borrow or return books through us. Books can be returned through the external postbox on the Geography building, or at the drop boxes at the Medical Library and the Betty and Gordon Moore Library. There is also a 'Click & Collect' service operating from the UL, using the books held in their collections.
    • If the Geography Library is the only place holding a specific title which a visitor would like to borrow, it may be possible to arrange a collection from outside the building by contacting library staff in advance.
    • there will still be periods during the vacations when the Library will be closed or unstaffed as the staffing levels don't permit full coverage (see below).
    • you will still need to check this page for details of library closures during the vacations, or any anticipated changes to opening hours during Term. We will also communicate any changes on our Twitter account.

Upcoming changes to opening hours

Geography Library staff will continue to provide zero contact services

Our service operating hours over the summer vacation are reduced according to staff availability (zero contact services will be available on Thursdays and Fridays if the Librarian is present). There are a number of weeks when the Geography Library will be closed to accommodate staff leave (see below).

Only members of the Department of Geography can use the Library and its services at this time.*

Please only come into the building to visit us during our operating hours if you have a book to return, or if you have a book to collect and you have been contacted to say it is ready for you. We are using the wooden shelves outside the library entrance as a collection point. Books can be returned to the box in front of the Library entrance, or at the external postbox outside the Geography building.

(* Scan & Deliver is available to all members of University of Cambridge)

Advance notice of online library service closures

For the foreseeable future, the Library remains open for online service, and zero contact services, during standard operating hours.

Due to staffing levels, there may be times when no library service can be provided.

Over the summer vacation 2021, there is no library service on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

Our other planned library closure dates for the summer vacation are:

  • Tuesday 31 August
  • Monday 6 September to Friday 10 September
