MPhil in Geography

Master of Philosophy Degree Course
Full-time, one year (12 months)

If you are exploring the possibility of MPhil in Geography in the Cambridge Geography Department you will:

  • have usually done an undergraduate degree in physical geography or an earth science subject
  • probably be looking for an MPhil research course
  • relish the stimulus of one of the UK's premier research departments.

The MPhil in Geography is a 12 month full-time programme of research that introduces students to research skills and specialist knowledge. It involves carrying out an original piece of research and is examined on the basis of a dissertation; there are no taught courses.

We would not normally admit more than 1 or 2 MPhil applicants per year to this course and if you are interested in applying please get in touch directly with the Department's Graduate Office Administrator BEFORE making an application to ascertain if you would be a suitable candidate.

The deadline for applications for October 2019 admission is 29 March 2019. Applications can be made from September 2018 for October 2019 admission.

The Department of Geography strongly encourages early application to the programme with this suggested earlier deadline, to enable you to engage with any potential supervisors.

Cambridge Funding Competitions deadline: 3rd January 2019 - to be considered for these, note this earlier deadline. (Some Gates Cambridge Scholarship funding applications are even earlier than this.) Please also note this includes all references which must have been submitted in advance of this funding deadline.

Please note that this MPhil is not a taught programme - it is a research MPhil.

Expected academic standard

Applicants for this course should have achieved a UK First class Honours Degree or equivalent.
