Department of Geography

Engaging with Geography

Can you help us continue to deliver outstanding teaching and world-leading research? Can you support our students as they embark on ever more adventurous expeditions around the world or as they take their first steps into careers following graduation? Can you help our researchers working to combat and counteract changes threatening our environment?

Our alumni contribute to the Department in a huge variety of ways: from serving as year representatives, to hosting interns, to making donations, and we are enormously grateful for all the help and support that we receive from you.

Here are just a few of the ways that you can get involved:

Engaging fellow alumni

As we launch our centenary alumni engagement programme, we need your help to make sure that we’re engaging with our alumni in the most effective ways and keeping in touch with all the right people.

In particular, we are seeking help with the following:

  • Send us your records of life in the Department. To mark our centenary, we’re compiling a new archive of the last 100 years of the Department of Geography. For this, we’d love to have photos, written reminiscences and memorabilia of your time in the Department. Please send to the contact details below. We will take copies and return the originals to you.
  • Volunteer as a year representative. We’re looking for individuals from each year group to serve as year representatives and help us get fellow alumni involved in our activities. If you would be happy to represent your year, please get in touch.
  • Help organise a reunion. In the lead up to our centenary, we’re looking to organise a series of alumni reunions here in the Department- but to do this we need your help! Is your year coming up to an important anniversary? Could you work with us to organise a reunion in the Department for your year group? If so, please contact us on the details below.

If you are interested in any of the above, please contact us.

Alumni Careers Service

We know our alumni have gone on to achieve great success in a wide variety of fields which our current students would greatly benefit from learning more about.

We are always looking for alumni who would be willing to host current students on internships to learn more about the huge variety of careers that Geography can lead on to. If you are able to host one of our students as an intern in your organisation, please contact us.

Or, if you would be willing to share your expertise on the world of careers available to Geography graduates with our current students through a careers talk or at CUGS’ Geography careers fair, please contact us.

Additionally, you may be interested in taking part in the University Alumni Careers network, which includes mentoring – Alumni Careers Connect.

Philanthropic support

Following our celebration of the centenary of the Geographical Tripos in 2019, we have launched a number of initiatives that will ensure the continued prosperity of the Department of Geography for the next 100 years.
