The Department is happy to announce that we have secured funding to install a lift in our Main Building; this will mean that for the first time, all floors of the building will be completely accessible. The project will also involve the installation of additional toilet facilities and a re-modelling of the Library entrance space.
The project will commence in June 2023 and the planned completion date is January 2024.
During the building works, the Main Building will closed to all students and the majority of staff, with the exception of those working in the laboratories.
Subject to confirmation of several aspects of the project, our plans for the closure period are as follows –
- All teaching will be accommodated in either the William Hardy Building (our sister building next door), the Scott Polar Research Institute, the Department of Chemistry (next door to SPRI), the David Attenborough Building or one of the nearby Downing Site buildings.
- Please note that the teaching for the MPhil in Conservation Leadership and the MPhil in Polar Studies will not be affected as these courses already use facilities outside the Main Building.
- The Library will be closed to visitors but will offer online services, and click and collect services in Michaelmas Term 2023.
- The laboratories and the Tree Ring Unit will be open by appointment with staff, only (details to be confirmed).
- Study spaces will be allocated to PhD students in the William Hardy Building.
- Professional services staff will be available throughout the building work, either remotely or in the William Hardy Building.
