Creating a GIS resource of the transport network of Britain 1379-1911

Thanks to the generous funding of the ESRC, the Leverhulme Trust and the Isaac Newton Trust we have been able to create many of the elements of a GIS (Geographical Information Systems) resource of the transport networks of Britain 1379-1911. The principal elements completed are roads c. 1370 and 1675, turnpike roads 1663-1729, navigable waterways 1600-1947 and railways c. 2000. Work in progress or awaiting the result of grant applications include ports 1791-1891 and turnpike roads 1730-1830.
