Categorising occupations: The primary, secondary, tertiary (PST) System
Raw occupational data need to be organised into categories before it can be used. The occupations project uses the Primary, Secondary, Tertiary (PST) scheme devised by E.A. Wrigley. We will shortly be making this system and the associated look-up tables available online. Currently it codes 26,000 raw descriptors into 3,000 occupations recognised as genuinely distinct. Each of these occupations is allocated a four digit classification in PST.

The look-up tables for coding data with PST will be here available soon.
