The occupational structure of Britain 1379-1911

This research program directed by Leigh Shaw-Taylor and Tony Wrigley aims ultimately to reconstruct the evolution of the occupational structure of Britain from the late medieval period down to the early twentieth century. The project has been designated as a British Academy Research project since 2007 (renewed for a further five years in 2012).

The first major phase of this research programme (2003-6) entitled, 'Male occupational change and economic growth in England 1750-1851', was funded by the ESRC (RES 000-23-0131). The ESRC also funded the second phase (2006-9) of this research program entitled, 'The changing occupational structure of nineteenth century Britain; (RES-000-23-1579). The Leverhulme Trust funded the third major phase (2009-12) of this research program: 'The occupational structure of England and Wales c.1379 to c.1729.' Further generous funding has been received from the British Academy, the Leverhulme Trust, and the Isaac Newton Trust.
