Lab and Field Equipment Services Technician
Geologist providing technical support for teaching and research in the Geography Science Labs and in the field, reporting to the Lab & Field Equipment Services Manager.
- Maintaining a safe working environment in the labs: monitoring lab work; implementing and providing guidance on health & safety regulations and good lab practice; record keeping.
- Administration of lab services: access; bench and instrument bookings; inductions; instruction in lab techniques and use of equipment and instrumentation; supervision.
- Lab maintenance: routine care of lab equipment; preparation of chemical solutions; stock control; liaising with external lab service providers; maintaining tidiness in the lab.
- Teaching support: preparation of equipment and materials for undergraduate and graduate classes; demonstration of lab and field techniques in practical classes; supporting undergraduate summer projects.
- Research support: providing researchers with guidance, advice and training in lab techniques and use of equipment; assisting with sample collection, preparation, analysis and storage.
- Field work support: equipment loans; preparing equipment; collection of samples and data in the field; maintaining and cataloguing field equipment.
Biography
Emily trained and qualified as a Lab Technician at The School of Environmental Sciences at the University of East Anglia. During her 4 years at UEA, Emily supported a broad spectrum of environmental research and developed an extensive portfolio of lab techniques and field skills.
Throughout this period Emily studied for her BSc (Hons) in GeoSciences with the Open University and finally graduated at Ely Cathedral in June 2011, after 6 years of part-time learning.
