ESRC (Economic and Social Research Council) Studentships

The Department of Geography is pleased to participate in the ESRC Doctoral Training Partnership (DTP) at the University of Cambridge. A range of studentships are available across the social sciences at Cambridge; if you are interested in how society works and how it can handle global challenges, a DTP studentship will give you a world-class training programme, with access to leading international scholars both at Cambridge and other DTPs, and a wide community of fellow social scientists.

You can find out more about ESRC DTP studentships.

The deadline for applications is Tuesday, 7th January 2020.

Please note that you must have a fee status of “home” (eligible for a full award of fees and maintenance) or “EU” (eligible for fees only award) to be eligible for an ESRC award. Your research topic must also be a ‘Human Geography’ topic. To qualify for ESRC support for a PhD award (‘+3’) you will normally need to have completed or be completing a Masters. The normal route for funding for a Masters and PhD (‘1+3’) students at Geography, is through the MPhil in Geographical Research.

How to apply

Prospective applicants must make contact with the Geography Graduate Office as soon as possible so your interest in an award can be registered.

You should also make contact and discuss your research proposal with a potential supervisor at the Geography Department prior to making an application. There is a list of the academics and their research interests on the main Geography website. Generally, we do not ask MPhil (Masters) applicants to contact potential supervisors but if you are applying for ESRC Masters and PhD (‘1+3’) funding it is expected that you will have made contact and discussed your research topic.

Once you have found a potential supervisor you should apply to the University via Graduate Admissions. Please allow plenty of time to complete your application. There is information about the application process on their website, but the Graduate Admissions Office administers all graduate applications for the University, please consult their website.
